Research Comments: | Monk’s first album for the fledgling Riverside label was also the company’s first 12-inch modern jazz LP. The project reflected producer Keepnews’ desire to temper the pianist’s image as “the High Priest of Bop” by having him record an album of standard Ellington tunes. Keepnews wrote that the album “was planned as the start of a campaign that has long since been won: a campaign to overcome the fears of those who had previously made the mistake of feeling that Monk was ‘too difficult’ and ‘too far out’ for them.” According to Keepnews, “Thelonious readily approved the whole idea.” Some of these tracks were recorded on July 27, 1955. |
