Purpose and Scope

Dan Skea

The primary purpose of this site is to present a remarkable discography of Rudy Van Gelder’s work based on the meticulous research of Dan Skea. This database contains a comprehensive index of Rudy Van Gelder’s recording work between 1948 and 2001, when Dan concluded his extensive work. It is not a “complete” discography, given that Rudy continued to log sessions sporadically for 15 more years (in fact, until just a few months before his death on August 25, 2016 at the ripe old age of 91). Instead, this database provides expanded information, corrections, and unique (and in some cases previously unpublished) details about recording sessions that took place during Van Gelder’s most prolific years. These decades coincide with periods in jazz history that are exceptionally significant.

Sadly, Dan Skea passed away in 2019 and cannot respond to critique or defend his assertions. Dan’s nephew, Carl Severance has worked to bring this treasure trove to light and remains in possession of the supporting materials in case there is a need for further discussion or exploration. This site represents Carl’s gift in remembrance of Dan and his extraordinary accomplishments.

The information and presentation may not be perfect and the site may not work flawlessly. Carl is not a database programmer, and has made use of free and low-cost tools (e.g. WordPress) to create this site. Please be understanding, and feel free to share your constructive feedback.
