Research Comments:Phil Woods: “Rudy was fairly fastidious. As I remember, there’s a Phil and Quill record – I think it’s on, maybe it’s, it might be Pairing Off – I forget what it was. But I remember it was a cold wintry day, and Quill and I had brought a six-pack, you know. And we had this six-pack at the foot of the microphone, and we were both sharing a microphone, and had it at the foot of the mike. And you know, in those days we kind of stretched out, tunes would last fifteen minutes or something. So Quill, during my solo, Quill bent down and opened up a beer, and as he popped the beer, you can hear it – you can the the pfff! – and it overflowed and started to go on the carpet. And I always play with my eyes closed – I didn’t know what was happening. And I happened to look up, and here’s Rudy, storming out of his part, of his closet. And he comes out and he grabs – all this time the rhythm is playing, I’m still soloing – he grabs the six-pack, and he goes and he opens the front door and he throws it out into a snow bank, slams the door and goes back into the studio. And the astute listener can hear this jazz drama play out.”
