Research Comments:Rudy’s first session for Bob Weinstock’s Prestige label. Weinstock remembers his initial contact with Van Gelder: “Well, it’s a funny story. You know, I was always a collector. Alfred [Lion] was one of my heroes. So I always made sure I got all the Blue Note records. What I liked was the good music. And then I kept noticing on the LPs it said, ‘Van Gelder, Van Gelder.’ I said, ‘What a good sound.’ And then one day, in the town of Teaneck, New Jersey, where I lived at the time, I was walking on the main street – which was called Cedar Lane – and I saw a sign on a window: Dr. Rudolph Van Gelder, Optometrist. So I said, ‘Well, that must be Rudy Van Gelder, the guy doing the recording.’ So I went in, and he wasn’t busy. And I said, ‘Are you the Rudy Van Gelder that does Blue Note?’ And he says, ‘Yeah – that’s me.’ And I complimented him, and I said, ‘Are you allowed to do another company?’ He said, ‘Sure.’ And I told him, ‘Well, I have a Miles Davis coming up and I’d like to do it with you.’ And that’s how it started.”
