Research Comments:This was producer Bob Thiele’s first project with Coltrane. In his autobiography, Thiele recalled the excitement generated by a sixteen-minute high-powered blues on which pianist Tyner laid out: “As if possessed by the vociferant punctuations of Elvin Jones’ drumming and, it seemed, all the raging elemental forces of nature, Coltrane became a fevered dervish, a constant motion that the postage-stamp stage at the Vanguard could barely contain as he furiously hurled his fabled, searing ‘sheets of sound’ from his saxophone at the apocalyptic counterpoint ignited by his accompanists … It was Rudy Van Gelder, our indefatigable engineer, who immediately perceived that an invaluable document was about to be lost forever. Instantly he became a frenzied blur that mirrored Trane’s unpredictable, compulsive choreography, resolutely keeping a hand-held recording microphone in front of the saxophone, continuously and courageously climbing over chairs, tables, waiters, and customers to accurately capture every precious sound. And as suddenly as it began, this musical mega-nova ended. All of us associated with the recording were thoroughly drained, exalted, exhausted, and incapable to think of a title that would match the experience we had shared. It was Rudy Van Gelder who came up with the name that summarized both the extraordinary music and his own efforts: ‘Chasin’ the Trane.’” (Bob Thiele, What A Wonderful World, Oxford University Press, New York, 1995)
