Jimmy Smith: Six Views of the Blues

Date:Wednesday, July 16, 1958
Label/Number:Blue Note CD BN 5-21435-2
Personnel:Jimmy Smith (org) Cecil Payne (bs) Kenny Burrell (g) Art Blakey or Donald Bailey (d)
Tracks:St. Louis Blues / The Swingin’ Shepherd Blues / Blues No. 1 / Blues No. 2 / Blues No. 3 / Blues No. 4
Location:Hackensack
Producer:Alfred Lion
Liner Notes:Michael Cuscuna
Research Comments:Except for “The Swingin’ Shepherd Blues,” which was released on a 45 rpm single in 1958, none of these tracks were issued until 1999. The album title was created at that time. In his liner notes, Cuscuna suggests one of the reasons this session was not released by Alfred Lion is that Rudy closed Cecil Payne’s microphone whenever he finished soloing, thus abruptly changing the overall sound of the recording. Ruppli (both editions) lists a Don Bailey on bass, but no bass player is present on these tracks (the bass lines are played by Smith on the organ).
