Research Comments: | This was producer Ozzie Cadena’s first session at Hackensack. He had originally wanted to schedule Bennie Green as Johnson’s trombone partner, but Green refused the offer. Cadena then approached Eddie Bert, but Discovery Records, with whom Bert was under contract, refused to allow Eddie to record for Savoy. Kai Winding finally got the call to do this session, which turned out to be the first of many successful recordings for “Jay & Kai,” the most famous trombone team in the history of jazz. |
