Research Comments:The second volume in the Jazz Laboratory Series (see March 7, 1955). The series’ idea is explained in Ira Gitler’s liner notes: “In the studio the quartet did the tunes as in any normal recording session but although Phil was playing you don’t hear him. This comprises side B. Immediately afterwards Phil recorded his solos while listening to the playbacks of the rhythm section just as you will do when you play them at home. This is heard on side A. By employing this method the essential drive is retained because the rhythm section is captured while actually backing a soloist not as in old style ‘accompaniment’ records where the rhythm section accompanied an imaginary one. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder deserves much credit for his important part in the production of these records.” Ruppli’s Savoy discography says overdubbing was done on the same date, but Phil Woods says he did his solo overdubs some months later, after recovering from having his teeth knocked out in Staten Island. Same date as Gene Ammons Prestige session.
Status Notes:This session took place on the same date as another Rudy Van Gelder session.
