Research Comments: | Dolphy’s first date as a leader. Producer Esmond Edwards: “[Rudy] had some run-ins with the artists because of his fastidiousness, his unwillingness to bend any of his rules. One memorable incident – Eric Dolphy was playing alto and flute on a number. Which obviously needs to be differently miked. And most engineers, even then, would put up two different mikes. Rudy, I think in order to keep the sound as pure a possible, with as little leakage as possible, to not have to mess around grabbing pots at the time to adjust the level – he put the one mike, kind of compromised the position. So Eric had to bend almost double to play the flute, you know. ‘Hey, I can’t play this way – it’s affecting my breathing.’ He had this thing on his forehead, I don’t know what, and it started to pulsate. And Rudy turned red. Eventually Eric went ahead and did it, ‘cause I guess we weren’t gonna get anything done if he didn’t.” |
