Research Comments: | Producer Esmond Edwards remembers how casually Hawkins approached recording sessions: “I learned early on that Bean never prepared for a session. He could know three, six months in advance, he’d come to the studio with his flight bag and a bottle of vodka in it. And his car, and his horn, and that was it. And so you’d have to go, ‘Well, what are we going to do now, Bean?’ – ‘I dunno.’ So I ended up bringing a briefcase full of lead sheets. You know, I love standards, and I’d bring him a stack of standards. And he’d look through it, run it through once or twice, and it was like he wrote the tune, you know, when he started performing.” |
