Research Comments: | This session was purchased from the Progressive Label. Producer Gus Statiras recalled: “And that record date, Brew Moore brought a bottle of wine – I guess you call it a half a gallon of wine – and he started drinking. Well, I saw Rudy was really very unhappy. And that record session didn’t come out too good because Brew Moore did not want to play the fast tempos. The tempo would be going ninety-nine miles-an-hour; he was playing at forty-five miles-an-hour. So Chuck Wayne asked me to get Zoot Sims, who was signed to Prestige. And Bob Weinstock, who I’d helped earlier that year, said ‘Gus, you can have him if I can have Al Cohn.’ Well, I didn’t have Al Cohn under contract – Al and I just shook hands – and I said, ‘Sure.’ So the next day, Zoot came over there, sat in a chair, folded his legs and knocked off the tunes like they were nothin’. We did the whole record date twice. [To Rudy]: You remember that?”* * From a panel honoring Van Gelder at the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors Conference, Teaneck, NJ, August 7, 1993. |
