Research Comments: | An early example of the emerging technique of overdubbing. In a blindfold test administered by Leonard Feather and published in Down Beat magazine’s issue of October 31, 1956, Van Gelder responded to the track “Yes, Indeed” by saying, “What can I say about this? Ha, ha, ha. This is a multidubbing job I did with him. Bobby is a wonderful person and a good friend of mine. We spent a good many happy hours together making this record. I think the end result is pretty good. I’m glad you think the quality didn’t suffer. Altogether he made 14 parts – the group, the rhythm, and the instruments. I didn’t use any special equipment – just standard equipment used by all good recording studios today. I like this record. As a matter of fact, I wish you had an extra copy, because I broke mine. I’m glad you selected this to play, not knowing that I made it.” |
