Research Comments:In a documentary on Blue Note produced for British television, Rudy spoke of this album’s title tune: “That particular track had a lot of editing. Making the breaks, which was the essence of that tune, come out just right. I remember working very hard, right on the machine over there, editing that ‘Sidewinder.’ But it was a nice record. And it really changed the course of Blue Note, the direction they were taking after that. That record got into many places that they never dreamt it would be played, and sort of opened up a lot of doors for them. And not necessarily all to the good, as far as I’m concerned. Because it sort of made them think, for that time, pop oriented, and I didn’t feel that was a good thing for that company. I really was not comfortable with that. Things did change after that.” * * Rudy Van Gelder, from Blue Note. London: LWT Television, Ltd. The South Bank Show. Telecast February 16, 1986.
