Research Comments: | Same date as Hank Mobley Blue Note session. Bob Thiele says almost all these songs were done in one take, but that on “My One and Only Love,” Hartman was so mesmerized by Coltrane’s solo that he forgot to come back in for his closing vocal. Everyone in the booth thought they had lost a classic performance, but on the next take, according to Thiele, an unworried Coltrane “created the timeless solo that saxophonists will continue to imitate for as long as the sound of jazz is heard.” (Bob Thiele, What A Wonderful World, Oxford University Press, New York, 1995.) |
Status Notes: | This session took place on the same date as another Rudy Van Gelder session. |
