Research Comments:Lateef recalls recording his original tune “Cry! Tender.” “I played a tenor solo that I liked, more or less, but there was a squeak in it – a long squeak. And Rudy took the squeak out. I don’t know how he did it, but he manipulated a lot of the apparatus in the studio. And the squeak must have been at least two or three seconds long. It was a mechanical fault in the instrument. It was amazing. He said the reason he was able to do it was because the squeak started on the beat. But he did it. It was phenomenal.”
