Research Comments: | A tribute to Charlie Parker recorded at New York’s Five Spot Cafe. This session, originally released on Signal, was later purchased by Savoy. From the uncredited liner notes: “The excitement present in this session is due in no small part to the fact that it was done with a live audience which the musicians could play to and receive a reaction from. As one of the newest and most relaxed places to hear jazz in New York, the Five Spot at 5 Cooper Square in Manhattan (between 4th and 5th Streets), was an ideal gathering place. Equipped with a new Steinway, the room was ready for the ministrations of Rudy Van Gelder, one of jazz’s most perceptive engineers.” |
