Research Comments: | None of these titles were issued until they appeared as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of the album Gil’s Guests. Both Ruppli’s Prestige Discography and the CD notes fail to list tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims or vibraphonist Teddy Charles on this date. They also erroneously list Donald Byrd as the trumpet player and Phil Woods as the alto saxophonist. Gil Mellé was especially disappointed about the omission of Sims’ credit, saying “Zoot was a very good friend of mine, and I’m very proud of the fact that he was on one of my records, believe me.” Hal McKusick confirms the presence of Farmer, Charles and himself: “The alto player is definitely me … interesting to hear how I played in those days … at least on those tracks … I’m better today, I think … no ego, just straight ahead.” |
