Research Comments: | This was the first session Esmond Edwards attended. He came along with his Harlem neighbor, Art Taylor, because he was interested in photography and wanted to get some pictures of jazz musicians at a session. When Edwards showed the results to Prestige owner Bob Weinstock, one of his pictures was chosen for the album cover. The photo shows McLean in a darkened studio with trumpeter Donald Byrd’s figure silhouetted by light coming from the control booth behind him. Esmond says that in capturing this image he used the technique of “available darkness.” He became a producer for Prestige in 1958 and later for the Argo and Verve labels, eventually supervising over 250 sessions recorded by Rudy. |
