Research Comments: | These tracks were originally produced by Jules Colomby for Signal Records and subsequently purchased by Savoy. All the musicians wore headphones, with Gryce isolated in the control booth with Van Gelder. An early version of the Music Minus One idea, the album featured the quartet on one side and just the rhythm section (same tracks) on the other, providing a means for the student musician to play along. A second volume in the series featured Phil Woods with the Hall Overton Trio (see February 8, 1955). |
