Research Comments:Co-producer Mark Feldman was concerned that Joseph, a lesser-known figure who had not been active since the 1950s, might freeze under studio conditions. But, says Feldman, “Don Joseph walked in like he just stepped into the diner to have breakfast, and sat down with a bunch of his buddies. And he played, and he was fantastic. He had this little beat-up cornet, and he’s sitting next to a powerhouse like Al Cohn. And it was two days, and to me it was one of the most memorable sessions. And I must say that I give my ex-partner all the credit in the world for coming up with this idea, and persevering and making it happen.” Some of these tracks were recorded the following day.
