Research Comments: | The group Sphere was formed primarily to perform the music of Thelonious Monk. Ironically, Monk died on the very date of this, their first recording. Kenny Barron: “We knew that Monk was sick. And actually our aim really was – we were thinking, well, maybe we can do this record, and maybe he would hear it, and kind of respond to it, you know, by coming out to play. Of course, that didn’t work. But I don’t think we had any idea just how sick he was. And actually, on the way home – I was taking Buster home after the session – and we turned on the jazz station, and that’s when we heard. So, as we were recording, he passed away.” |
